Beezantium at The Newt in Somerset: A Harmonious Fusion of Architecture, Nature, and Education
The Beezantium, an award-winning folly designed by Invisible Studio for The Newt in Somerset, stands as a testament to innovative architecture that intertwines ecological awareness with immersive design. Completed in 2021, this 50m² structure has garnered acclaim, including the RIBA South West Award 2023, for its creative approach to educating the public about the vital role of bees in our ecosystem.
Situated within the estate's woodland, the Beezantium's design draws inspiration from traditional follies, combining whimsical aesthetics with functional purpose. Its distinctive concave copper roof, punctuated by oval oculi windows, not only serves as a visual focal point but also facilitates natural light and ventilation within the space . The exterior is clad in locally sourced, unseasoned oak, providing natural cavities that serve as habitats for various bee species. Internally, the space is finished with polished honey oak panelling, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that enhances the sensory experience for visitors.
The Beezantium is more than just an architectural feat; it is an interactive educational space that offers visitors a unique perspective on the life of bees. Active beehives are integrated into the external walls, allowing guests to observe the bees in their natural environment without disturbing them. Inside, an immersive exhibition designed in collaboration with Kossmanndejong presents the world from a bee's perspective, highlighting the intricate relationships between bees, the land, and humans.
Positioned on the brow of a hill overlooking a newly installed lake, the Beezantium's placement encourages exploration and engagement with the surrounding landscape. The structure's design and location invite visitors to reflect on the interconnectedness of nature and the importance of preserving biodiversity.
The Beezantium exemplifies Invisible Studio's ethos of creating architecture that is not only functional but also deeply connected to its environment and purpose. Through its innovative design and educational initiatives, the Beezantium fosters a greater appreciation for the natural world and the vital role that bees play within it.
