YOGA STUDIO

Hadspen House: A Harmonious Sanctuary in Somerset

The Yoga Studio at the Newt Hotel in Somerset is a seamless continuation of Invisible Studio’s architectural exploration at the hotel, following the completion of the adjacent Gym (Room in a Productive Garden) and the Beezantium. This third building reflects Invisible Studio’s signature approach of integrating design with natural materials, the surrounding environment, and a clear dialogue with previous architectural works.

Designed as a complementary structure to the Gym, the Yoga Studio offers a tranquil and immersive space for reflection and practice. While the Gym is oriented to the vegetable garden with its expansive window, the Yoga Studio turns its attention skyward through an 11-meter rooflight made from a single insulated double-glazed unit, providing a serene view of the heavens above. This deliberate emphasis on natural light and connection to the sky creates an atmosphere that fosters calm and introspection, essential to the practice of yoga.

Internally, the studio is lined entirely in warm beech slats, enveloping the space in a soft, tactile finish that enhances the sense of sanctuary and immersion. The warm tones of the wood, combined with the spatial openness, make for a space that is both visually stunning and functionally supportive of yoga practice.

The design of the Yoga Studio was conceived in response to the informal yoga classes that had been held in the Beezantium during the early phases of the hotel’s construction. Recognizing the demand for a dedicated space, the hotel requested a top-lit sanctuary that would mirror the natural light quality of the Beezantium but situated behind the Gym.

As with the Gym and Beezantium, the Yoga Studio incorporates rammed stone made from locally sourced limestone, giving the building its distinctive red hue. This material choice ties the Yoga Studio to the broader material palette of the Newt Hotel, while copper detailing brings continuity with the Beezantium, creating a harmonious architectural family.

The Yoga Studio exemplifies Invisible Studio’s commitment to creating spaces that are not only functional but also deeply attuned to the natural world, providing visitors with a peaceful retreat that nurtures both the body and the spirit. Its integration of sustainable materials, natural light, and context-driven design reinforces the ethos of Invisible Studio’s architectural philosophy: designing spaces that are grounded in their environment while promoting well-being and mindfulness.
